As part of its commitment and contribution in supporting state and non-state efforts to strengthen resilience and peace in Nigeria, the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), has called for the establishing of a Nigerian Resilience and Peace Facility (NRP). To get the desired result out of the initiative, the institute adds that it should be driven by the private sector.

In a statement issued by the Country Director – Nigeria, United States Institute of Peace (USIP), Dr Chris Kwaja, on Friday 12th July, 2024, it was noted that the initiative is in consonance with previous structures such as the African Union Peace Fund, which was established as part of the broader African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) that, together with the PSC, the African Standby Force, the Military Staff Committee, the Continental Early Warning System, and the Panel of the Wise, meant to enhance the prevention, management, and resolution of conflicts, and facilitates timely and effective responses to conflict and crisis situations in Africa.
The statement points out that the private sector involvement can provide reliable and predictable funding for the Nigerian Resilience and Peace Facility, targeting capacity building for peace practitioners, early warning and early response, implementation of the national action plans on women, peace and security; youth, peace and security, among others.
“This would serve as the private sector’s main instrument for supporting efforts towards peace, security and stability in Nigeria, through a medium that is well-coordinated and resourced.” The institute further identified key private sector players such as the Dangote Foundation, Abdul Samad Rabiu African Initiative (ASR Africa), Tony Elumelu Foundation, TY Danjuma Foundation among others to be involved in the initiative.
In further supporting the USIP’s call for the establishment of the NRP facility, part of the statement notes that at the request of African leaders, the European Union established African Peace Facility through the European Development Fund, to support the African Union’s and African Regional Economic Communities’ efforts in the area of peace and security. This according to the institute, makes it important for Nigeria to have same facility to support current efforts aimed at strengthening peace and security.
