In preparation for the highly anticipated local government elections set for October 9, 2024, the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has made substantial efforts to guarantee a transparent, free, and credible voting process. One key initiative was the maiden mock election organized to assess the effectiveness of its electoral processes, notably testing the newly launched PLASIEC Voter Verification System (VVS).

The mock election was conducted across Plateau’s three senatorial zones, with selected polling units in various local government areas, including:
Southern Zone: Wase Local Government, Danbiram Ward, Wase Primary School Polling UnitShendam Local Government, Pangwasa Ward, Naburuk Polling Unit.
Central Zone: Pankshin Local Government, Dokpai Ward, Ngolong Ban Polling Unit. Mangu Local Government, Ampang West Ward, Pushit I Polling Unit.
Northern Zone: Riyom Local Government, Shonong Ward, LWA Primary School Polling Unit. Jos North Local Government, Angwan Rogo/Rimi Ward, Ungwan Rogo Primary School Polling Unit.

This landmark exercise saw a notable turnout of voters eager to participate and familiarize themselves with the electoral process ahead of the official election. The procedure adhered to standard election protocols: staff deployment, material distribution, voter queuing, verification of voters through the VVS, and casting of votes.

The PLASIEC Voter Verification System proved to be highly efficient, performing admirably in confirming the identities of voters, which contributed to a seamless and well-organized mock election. There were no significant delays, and feedback from officials and participants was overwhelmingly positive, affirming the commission’s readiness to conduct a smooth and credible election.
As October 9 approaches, PLASIEC’s ongoing refinement of its systems, including the successful rollout of the VVS, demonstrates its dedication to delivering an election that is free, fair, and transparent for the people of Plateau State. The mock election has been a critical milestone in ensuring the upcoming polls meet the highest standards of integrity and credibility.
