Jos School Building Collapse: PSJ Nigeria Condoles families of Victims – blames mishap on negligence by Proprietor-PTA-Regulatory Agencies

The International Organization for Peace Building and Social Justice (PSJ Nigeria) has expressed deep sadness over the unfortunate collapse of the school building of Saints Academy Busa-Buji, Jos on Friday 12th July, 2024. They also called on the Plateau State Government to take proactive steps to prevent future occurrence.

In as statement issued by the Program Officer, Sam Odeh on Tuesday 16th 2024, he blamed the mishap on negligence on the part of the Proprietor, Parents Teachers Association who according them ignored warning signs which led to the unfortunate loss of over 20 lives of innocent children. The organization also blamed the regulatory agency for not doing enough in oversight to prevent the unfortunate incident.

Part of the statement reads “This unfortunate incident has resulted in significant loss and distress within our community. Initial reports indicate that the collapse was caused by structural weaknesses in the building. Despite evident signs of compromise, school proprietors neglected necessary interventions.”

“Teachers, who might have observed these warning signs, also failed to take action. Additionally, the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) did not adequately supervise the learning environment. Alarmingly, the development control agency had previously issued a clean bill and approval for the building, raising serious concerns about oversight and accountability.”

“The collapse of a section of Saint Academy School is a needless tragedy that has brought unimaginable sorrow to families and the community. Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and loved ones during this difficult time. We extend our deepest condolences and prayers for their comfort and strength.”

“It is disheartening to learn that this incident could have been avoided. The proprietors of the school ignored the clear signs of structural compromise, and there was a collective failure by teachers, the PTA, and the development control agency to take appropriate action. This lack of responsibility and oversight is unacceptable and must be addressed to prevent future occurrences.”

“We call upon all stakeholders, including educational authorities, parents, and governmental agencies, to take pragmatic steps to ensure the safety of our children in schools. Rigorous inspections, accountability, and prompt action in addressing structural issues are paramount.”

PSJ Nigeria, however commended the Executive Governor of Plateau State Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang and his cabinet for responding swiftly and rising to the occasion, while equally hailing the efforts of the general public and emergency response teams who helped in the rescue operation. “We commend the State Governor for his swift response, visit, and words of comfort to the affected families. His demonstration of leadership in this time of despair is commendable. We urge the committee set up by the governor to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that justice is served.”

Odey called for collective and collaborative efforts from all stakeholders and the public to ensure thar schools are safe for learning and free from such unfortunate occurrences. “Together, we must ensure that our schools are safe havens for learning, free from preventable tragedies. Let us work collectively to build a future where such incidents are unheard of.”
