A group referred to as ‘Media Action for Health, Environment and Sustainable Development (MAHESD)’ has called on government, critical stakeholders and the general public to take actions to end Indiscriminate Deforestation and Habitat Destruction, Indiscriminate Mining and Land Discrimination, Indiscriminate Dumping of Refuse on water ways as well as all other practices that are capable of undermining the climate.
This was presented by the group to mark the 2024 World Environment Day. In a statement signed by the Program Officer of MAHESD, Joel Gomiyar and made available in Jos on Wednesday 5th June, 2024, they also called on public “…to protect and revive the ecosystem which is critical in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.”
“Most of the environmental risks facing the State and the world at large are primarily caused by human activities. It therefore becomes evident that our actions have far-reaching consequences hence, the urgency in the call for us to address these environmental challenges.”
The group additionally called on government and citizens to
“Manage gully erosion, Address water pollution and contamination, issues surrounding Climate Change and Global Impact, Repeal the environment law to capture the conservation of biodiversity and stiffer penalties on violators, consider waste sorting, disposal as a business and key into it.
Other issues raised include the call for the ban on the use of single-use plastics in the state and give urgent attention to the Jos wildlife park e.t.c.
The group also called on media practitioners to contribute their quota in the following ways;
“1. Raising awareness to educate the public about the environmental issues we face.”
“2. Supporting Sustainable Practice by advocating for, and embracing sustainable practices in our daily lives, such as reducing waste, and conserving energy.”
“3. Pushing for policy changes by urging the government to implement policies that promote sustainable renewable and environmental protection.”
They called on all citizens to rise to the occasion to ensure a clean and healthy environment.
