The Plateau State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Ephraim Usman has applauded the University of Jos Alumni Association for initiating a skills acquisition programme that is aimed at empowering unemployed graduates of its association to become self reliant.

The Commissioner made this known in his office when he received national officials of the University of Jos Alumni Association who paid him a courtesy visit.Hon Usman stated that for the nation to move forward, it must focus on skills acquisition by training its citizens to be economically self-sufficient.He commended the Association for not only embarking on the training of its members on different skills but also assisting less privileged students settle their tuition fees.
The Commissioner charged members of the association to do more in assisting the University and its members and also extend the gesture to undergraduate students of the University who cannot pay their tuition fees, adding that this would reduce the rate of students dropout and crime in the society.
Earlier in his remark, the national president of the University of Jos Alumni Association, Pastor Nuhu Johnson Sani said they were in the Commissioner’s office to congratulate him on his appointment and appreciated Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang for appointing their members into his cabinet.
Pastor Sani informed the commissioner that the Association had commenced the training of its members who were unemployed in skill acquisition to enable them to be self-sufficient, adding that they had also been assisting less privileged undergraduates of the University in settling their tuition fees to avoid being dropped out of school.
Also at the Ministry on a courtesy call were officials of the national body of the Mwaghavul Students’ Association led by its president, Panshak Moses Gullah.The president stated that they were at the Ministry to intimate the commissioner on the association’s programme and to seek collaboration with the ministry for its success.
Mr. Gullah listed the association’s activities to include training of students for JAMB exams in three different locations every year and campaign against drug abuse. Responding, the Hon. Commissioner, Chief Ephraim Usman called on the Association not to take unionism for granted, because, in his words, it was a platform for raising future leaders .He commended them for their initiative and stressed that the ministry would collaborate with them where necessary.
