Media important in gaining Public Trust, addressing misconceptions, and the spread of Health Insurance Policies – Dr Mannaseh Agabus DG PLASCHEMA

The Director General of the Plateau State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (PLASCHEMA) Dr Mannaseh Agabus has said that the Media, through the spread of the right information is an important agent in gaining again Public Trust, addressing misconception, and the spread of Health Insurance Policies, thereby ensuring universal health coverage in the state. Hence, he called on media practitioners to key into his agency’s sustainable health insurance initiatives.

Dr Agabus made this known on Monday 6th May 2024 at a one-day interaction with media practitioner in Jos, Plateau State. The event with the theme “Media: A Tool for Sustainable Development.” had in attendance experienced Media Practitioners from the broadcast industry, print, electronic and online platforms Dr Agabus emphasized the important role of partnering with the media in disseminating vital details about PLASCHEMA’s health insurance policies, enrollment procedures, and benefits to the populace. He stressed that such collaboration facilitated the education and enlightenment of citizens about the significance of health insurance coverage and empowers them to make informed decisions concerning their healthcare needs.

He Highlighted the potentials of the media as a ready catalyst for policy advocacy, while underscoring the capacity of the media to propel policies supportive of PLASCHEMA’s sustainable health insurance programs.He added that through proper awareness about the importance of governmental backing for healthcare initiatives and advocating for health insurance coverage, the media can shape public opinion and policy formulation, thereby paving way for the expansion of access opportunities to quality healthcare services.

Furthermore, the DG PLASCHEMA enumerated the vital role of media engagement in fostering communication and collaboration among PLASCHEMA, government bodies, healthcare providers, insurance partners, and the public. Leveraging media platforms for stakeholder engagement facilitates dialogue and collective efforts towards enhancing access to affordable and comprehensive healthcare services through health insurance programs.“We believe that the media plays a crucial role in ensuring the continuity of social health insurance programs in Plateau State. By effectively communicating information about the benefits, coverage options, enrollment procedures, and updates related to health insurance programs, the media helps raise awareness and educate the public about the importance of health insurance coverage,” he said.

While highlighting the achievements of PLASCHEMA since he assumed office in 2023, Dr Agabus pointed out the support and full backing of the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barrister Caleb Mannaseh Mutfwang in clearing arrears in capitation and fee-for-service payments, equities, conducting house-to-house verifications of Basic Healthcare Provision Fund beneficiaries, and securing government funding to subsidize healthcare for the poor and vulnerable individuals across the state.

He concluded by highlighting the need to partner with informal organizations like Religious Organizations and also strengthening advocacy efforts with local government officials which have resulted in increased uptake of health insurance.

Chairperson of the Nigeria Union of Journalists Plateau State Chapter, Mrs. Ayuku Pwaspo commended PLASCHEMA for recognizing the pivotal role of media practitioners in promoting and sensitizing the public about the importance of healthcare plans.
